Cookie House Restoration

RESTORATION OF THE COOKIE HOUSE

This historic landmark was moved to safety, but lack of care now threatens it again, clearly shown in this picture. The historic "Cookie House" currently located at Cedar Point Park was the home of the first marine lab on the Florida mainland -- and it was right here in Englewood. Beginning in 1931, this structure housed the Bass Biological Laboratory and Zoological Research Supply Co. This eventually became Mote Marine, but the original site fell into disuse and disrepair. Thanks to the donations of local residents, the “Cookie House” was moved to the park in 2006 from the New Point Comfort area. The “Cookie House” earned its name from the notable pine log cross sections embedded in its concrete walls – the only known house of its type in Florida.

This uniqueness has not enabled its preservation. The Lemon Bay Historical Society is now calling for support from the community as they launch an effort to, firstly, repair the roof on the building. This effort is of primary concern as the leaking roof is damaging the rest of the structure. Then it will be time to raise funds to repair the rest of the building and establish a permanent display of the ground breaking marine studies that were done in Englewood by the Bass labs.
